Book Review : Baker’s Wife (& Giveaway)

I love reading all kinds of books.  One of my all time favorite authors is Ted Dekker, I will toss aside most others books to read his.

healyhead1 This time I was able to read a book by Erin Healy, who has written several books with Ted Dekker.  So, with my love for Dekker you can understand how thrilled I was to get a copy of The Baker’s Wife to review; I even saved it to savor on my recent trip to DC & NY.

The story of the Baker’s Wife is about Audrey Bofinger, the wife of a “former” pastor and her husband, Geoff.  These two are accused of a crime, however there is a significant lack of evidence.   The accuser, Jack is a deacon from the church where Geoff has been asked to step down, so there is a theory of revenge in the story, which kicks off the twists and turns.

One of my favorite facets of Audrey is that God moves her to do certain things, like to minister to a lonely, elderly woman with cancer.  He leads her to deliver bread to people alone and hurting and works through her to comfort those people.   She is also able to touch people and feel the pain they are going through as well.

Another character I enjoy following through the story is a woman named Diane.  She was recently released from prison and returns to her hometown to try and “fix” things.  Diane is on a journey beyond the one she is aware of.  While try to reconcile with her past, she is exploring what her future looks like, especially what it looks like with God.

There are a number of twists in this story, and I always love being kept on the edge of my seat!  I think Ms. Healy did a great job writing a story that was easy to follow, with characters you could easily identify with and understand and then throw in many twists and turns!

I would describe this book as a heart-warming, thriller – does that makes sense?  It is both!  I recommend this book, it is a page turner once you get about a third of the way into, you become committed to the characters and the story and have a hard time letting it go.

My favorite was probably the ending, there were several elements of redemption, and I love to see how God can redeem lives and also past hurts and mistakes.

I look forward to reading more of Ms. Healy’s stories in the future!

To save her husband and son, Audrey Bofinger must rescue her enemy.

The Bofinger family has lost their church ministry in a scandal exposed by Officer Jack Mansfield. Hoping to heal and to restore their reputation, Audrey, Geoff, and their son Ed take over a failing bakery in the small community.

Driving to the bakery one morning, blinded by fog, Audrey hits a motor scooter owned by Jack’s wife, Julie. The mangled scooter is crushed and bloody. But Julie is nowhere to be found. Her disappearance coincides with a sudden illness that nearly cripples Audrey.

Jack believes the Bofingers have hurt Julie to take revenge on him, but the evidence dries up and her trail goes cold. At a breaking point, Jack takes the tiny bakery and its patrons hostage, issuing only one demand: Audrey has six hours to return Julie to him, or lose Geoff and Ed forever.

With only an excruciating and intuitive gift, an ex-con, and Julie’s estranged daughter to help search for clues, Audrey starts the search of her life for a woman who has vanished like the fog.
